A new ped/bike path is being constructed next to a rail line near Augusta, Maine. It will provide nonmotorized access to the Capitol from Hallowell, Farmingdale, and Gardiner. Safety is provided by several feet of ballast between the rails and the path. Ballast is uncomfortable to walk or bike on, discouraging people from leaving the trail to go near the tracks.
